This year I have discovered that frozen meatballs are my favorite kitchen secret weapon. No matter what is going on in my life, I can whip up a fantastic meal in minutes using these little frozen gems. One of my favorites is Easy French Onion Meatballs.
This mouthwatering dish of Easy French Onion Meatballs takes the classic flavors of French onion soup and combines them with the convenience of frozen meatballs, resulting in a savory and satisfying meal that your family will love. In this blog post, we'll show you how to whip up this delectable dish in no time.
- 1 (32 oz) bag of Frozen Meatballs
- 2 large onions, thinly sliced
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 2 cups beef broth
- 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 2 cups Mozzarella or Swiss Cheese, shredded
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)
STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS:
Brown the Meatballs: In a skillet, add a little oil and brown the meatballs on all sides. You will not need to cook them all the way through, just make sure they have a crispy outer crust. Once they are browned, remove them from the pan.
Caramelize the Onions: In the skillet, melt butter over medium-low heat. Add thinly sliced onions and cook, stirring occasionally, until they are caramelized and golden brown. This process typically takes about 20-25 minutes and allows the natural sweetness of the onions to develop.
Make the French Onion Sauce: Once the onions are caramelized, sprinkle flour over them and cook for an additional 2 minutes, stirring constantly. Gradually pour in beef broth while stirring to avoid lumps. Add Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper, then simmer the sauce for 5-10 minutes until it thickens slightly.
Combine and Serve: Add the cooked meatballs to the skillet with the French onion sauce, tossing gently to coat the meatballs evenly. Allow them to simmer in the sauce for an additional 10 minutes to absorb the flavors and heat all the way through. Top with the cheese, cover and allow the cheese to melt. You can also place the pan under the broiler to allow the cheese to get brown and bubbly. Garnish with freshly chopped parsley before serving and Enjoy!
