Easy Dirty Rice Recipe

Today's recipe was one of those really fun ones to "create".  No, I didn't invent dirty rice, but my sister and I have had a love affair with the dirty rice on the Shoney's breakfast bar for years, and now that she lives in an area that doesn't have a Shoney's, I wanted her to be able to make it at home.  This Easy Dirty Rice Recipe is a SPOT ON dupe for the Shoney's version and it's ready in about 20 minutes.

I know you are gonna love this one, and I will share some take-two options at the end so...

Let's get started!

For this Easy Dirty Rice Recipe you will need a few simple ingredients:

The ingredients needed to make the Easy Dirty Rice Recipe

  • 1 lb of Breakfast Sausage
  • 1 cup of Instant Rice
  • 1 Green Bell Pepper, finely diced
  • 1 Red Bell Pepper, finely diced
  • 3 stalks of Celery, finely diced
  • 1 Onion, finely diced
  • 1 Tbsp Garlic, minced
  • 1 Tbsp Cajun/Creole Seasoning
  • 2 cups Chicken Broth
  • Sliced Green Onions to top with, optional
To begin you will want to place your pan over medium/high heat, add a little oil, and allow it to get HOT.

The green pepper, celery, and onion sautéing in a pan.

Once your pan is hot you will add the green pepper, onion, and celery.
Sauté for 2-3 minutes until the vegetables are tender and the onions are translucent.

You will notice I DID NOT add the red bell pepper here.  That's because I want that bright red color to shine through in the dish.  I will add it later.

Sausage cooking in the pan with the vegetables.

Now it's time to add the sausage and garlic.
Cook until the sausage is brown and no longer pink.

The instant rice and cajun/creole seasoning added to the pan with the sausage and vegetables.

When the sausage is fully cooked add the instant rice* and cajun/creole seasoning,

*I'm using instant rice for times sake.  If you do not have instant rice you can 100% use regular rice, just adjust the cooking time to that suggested on the packaging.

and the chicken broth.

Give everything a stir and bring the chicken broth to a boil.

The pan, on the stove, with a lid atop it.

When the chicken broth has reached a boil lower the heat to a simmer and cover to 5 minutes.

After 5 minutes turn the heat off and let sit for another 5 minutes.

Give everything a nice stir, top with some sliced green onion, and you are ready to eat!

How gorgeous does this pan look!?!

I personally like serving this up as a main dish with some green beans on the side, but it's perfect with eggs in the morning, grilled chicken, or even a breakfast burrito (we love to make those with the leftovers)!  No matter how you serve it I know you're gonna love it so get in the kitchen and give this Easy Dirty Rice Recipe a try tonight!

And as always...

  2. I am a former manager of Shoneys here in Arizona and we made our sausage rice entirely different. Shoneys permanently closed here in 1998, but there were several still running across the US. I wonder if they changed their recipe?
