Vegan BBQ Jackfruit Sandwich Recipe

Since switching to the plant-based life I have been having a lot of fun experiment in the kitchen with new ingredients.  One of the most surprising things we've stumbled across is jackfruit.  This really is a versatile fruit, that can take on any flavor and these Vegan BBQ Jackfruit Sandwiches are the perfect example how.

Meaty, juicy, smokey, a little spicy, all the things you crave in a BBQ sandwich, but these BBQ Jackfruit Sandwiches are 100% vegan!  They are so good even the carnivores in your life will love them! I can't wait to share this with you so...

Let's Get Started!

For these Vegan BBQ Jackfruit Sandwiches you are going to need a few simple ingredients:

The ingredients needed to make the BBQ Jackfruit sandwiches.

  • 20 oz cans of Jackfruit
  • 1 Onion, diced
  • 3 Cloves of Garlic, minced
  • 1 sachet of Sazón Seasoing
  • BBQ Sauce
  • Salt and Pepper, to taste
  • Buns
  • Coleslaw, to top

To begin you will need to drain and rinse your canned jackfruit.

Next, shred the jackfruit.  This can be done easily suing your fingers.

A cast iron pan on the stove with a little oil.

Next place a pan over medium/high heat and add a little oil.
Allow the pan to get hot.

Diced onions in the pan sautéing.

Once the pan is hot add the onion and cook until soft and translucent, 2-3 minutes.

Minced garlic added to the pan with the onions.

Next add the garlic.
Sauté until you can smell it coming from the pan, about a minute.

The drained and shredded jackfruit in the pan.

Now add the shredded jackfruit to the pan.

A packet of Sazon seasoning.

Add the Sazón seasoning and stir until everything is coated.

Let the jackfruit cook in the pan for about 10 minutes until browned.

Add your favorite BBQ sauce to the pan.

Stir until all of the browned jackfruit is coated in the BBQ sauce.

The amount is strictly based on your taste.  You make like is super saucy, you may be a little more sparing with the sauce...the choice is yours.  This is a judgment free blog.

Now place the jackfruit on a parchment lined baking sheet in a thin layer.

Place it under the broiler until the sauce has caramelized and the tips have started to char.
This is what really gives it that authentic BBQ taste.

Place it on your favorite bun, top it off with a little vegan coleslaw, and BAM you are eating some of the BEST BBQ sandwiches EVER!  It's mind-blowing how "real" tasting these are and I dare say the biggest carnivore in your life will be a fan.  I know you're gonna love it so get in the kitchen and give it a try TONIGHT!

Easy Vegan BBQ Sandwiches Recipe

  • 20 oz cans of Jackfruit
  • 1 Onion, diced

  • Salt and Pepper, to taste

Instructions:

How to cook Easy Vegan BBQ Sandwiches Recipe

  1. Drain and rise the jackfruit. 
  2. Shred the jackfruit using your fingers. 
  3. Place a pan over medium high heat with a little oil, and allow to get hot. 
  4. Once the pan is hot add the onion.  Sauce for 2-3 minutes until soft and translucent. 
  5. Add the garlic.  Cook for 1 minute.
  6. Add the jackfruit and Sazón seasoning.  Stir until everything is coated.
  7. Cook n the pan for about 10 minutes until everything is heated through and browned. 
  8. Add BBQ sauce and stir until everything is coated. 
  9. Taste for seasoning and make any adjustments. 
  10. Place the jackfruit on a lined baking sheet.  Spread out into a thin layer and place under the broiler.  
  11. Let cook until the sauce has caramelized and the tips have become charred.  
  12. Place on the bun of your choice.  
  13. Top with coleslaw.
  14. Serve and Enjoy!
