How to Make the Perfect West Virginia Slaw Dog

Here in West Virginia summer means one thing...HOT DOGS! Yes, we mountaineers take our hot dogs very seriously.  That's why I am partnering up with Lighthouse using Lighthouse Coleslaw Dressing to show you how you can create the PERFECT West Virginia Slaw Dog that is famous around these parts!

We love it so...

Let's Get Started!

Building this West Virginia Slaw Dog requires a few simple ingredients...

  • 1 jar of Lighthouse Coleslaw Dressing
  • 1 batch of West Virginia Hot Dog Sauce
  • 1 bag of Shredded Coleslaw Mix
  • Hot Dogs
  • Hot Dog Buns
  • 1 Onion, finely diced
  • Yellow Mustard
Before we get started building this WV Slaw Dog there are two MAIN components we need to discuss first, the 'slaw and the sauce.

Let's start with the 'slaw.  I like to keep things easy when I'm grilling.  I don't want to spend all my time in the kitchen chopping cabbage and making dressing so I really appreciate the simplicity of Lighthouse Cole Slaw Dressing.

Litehouse Coleslaw Dressings are sold cold. So all that’s required to make the best-tasting and easiest ‘slaw is scoop the dressing into a bag of coleslaw mix and shake!  It's the perfect blend of sweet and tangy, and the best part is because it's made with thick and creamy, freshly-made mayonnaise, it won't "water out" when added to the slaw mix.

The next key component in this WV Slaw Dog is the sauce.  West Virginians take their hot dog sauce very seriously and some are as secretive about their recipe as an Italian grandma is about her sauce.  Since I am a sharer, I will link my recipe for my West Virginia Hot Dog Sauce later this week.

Now it’s time to start building this WV Slaw Dog!

How the dog is built is as important as the ingredients themselves.  First item needed is a nice, fresh hot dog bun.  Next is the weenie (that's what we call hot dogs around these parts).

After that is a drizzle of yellow mustard.

Now you can top the weenie and mustard with your amazing West Virginia Hot Dog Sauce.

Then, top it all with that simple and delicious coleslaw made with the Litehouse Coleslaw Dressing.

Sprinkle a few finely chopped onions on top and there you have it!

This West Virginia Slaw Dog is, in my humble opinion, about THE BEST hot dog on the planet!  Warm and spicy, sweet and tangy, it’s like a flavor party in my mouth, and I know you are going to love it!  The best part is just how simple everything was to put together thanks to the Litehouse Coleslaw Dressing.  And speaking of Litehouse, they are hosting a sweepstakes from 6/13 - 7/4 where YOU could win your very own Yeti® cooler!  All you have to do is visit here or head on over to the Litehouse Facebook Page!

I know you're gonna love this West Virginia Slaw Dog recipe so head in the kitchen and give it a try tonight!

And as always...

  3. I assume the dressing is 13 fl oz but what size is the coleslaw mix. I have seen them from 8.5 oz to 14 oz. I lived in WV just 13 months and grew fond of their slaw dogs. I never thought I would get a recipe for them. I am really looking forward to having them again.
