Crockpot West Virginia Soup Beans Recipe

Soup beans is a recipe that is very dear to me.  It's my roots, my childhood, my heart.  Every respectable West Virginia woman has a recipe for these in her arsenal, and I can't wait to share my family's with you.

For this Crockpot West Virginia Soup Bean Recipe you are going to need a few simple ingredients:

The ingredients needed to make the soup beans.

  • 1 32 oz bag of Pinto Beans
  • 1 Onion, quartered
  • 1 Ham Bone or Ham Hock or Fat Back or Bacon etc.
  • 1 tsp Cumin
  • 1 tsp Onion Powder
  • 1 tsp Garlic Powder
  • 1 tsp Salt
  • 1 tsp Pepper
  • 4 cups Chicken Broth
  • 4 cups Water

Dry pinto beans soaking in water.

The night before you want to cook your beans place them in a large bowl, sift through them to see if there are any stones, and cover with water.

You will want to make sure there is an inch or two of water above the beans.

The next morning pour the beans into the slow cooker.

Cumin, onion powder, and garlic powder being added to the slow cooker.

Season with the onion powder, garlic powder, and cumin.

Salt and pepper being added to the crockpot.

You can also add the salt and pepper.

I will tell you that if you have not soaked your beans you can not season them with spiced until about 2 hours before you eat.  It will affect the way they cook.

Place the quartered onion in the slow cooker.

Add the ham bone or any other meat protein you choose to use.

A pitcher of chicken broth mixed with water on the counter.

Combine the chicken broth and water.

The water and chicken broth poured into the slow cooker.

 Pour into the crockpot.

The slow cooker with the lid on it set on LOW for 8 hours.

Place the lid on the slow cooker and set to LOW for 8 hours.

The ham bone on a plate beside the crockpot with a pair of tongs.

After 8 hours remove the ham bone from crockpot and remove any meaty bits to place back in the beans.

  • 4 cups Chicken Broth
  • 4 cups Water

How to cook Crockpot West Virginia Soup Beans Recipe

  1. The night before go through the dry beans to see if there are any stones.
  2. Place them in a large bowl and cover with water.  Allow to soak overnight. 
  3. The next morning pour the soaked beans into the crockpot and add the onion powder, garlic powder, cumin, salt, and pepper. *
  4. Stir everything around so that the beans are coated in the spice. 
  5. Add the quartered onion and ham bone to the slow cooker.**
  6. Add the water and chicken broth to the crockpot. 
  7. Cover and cook on LOW for 8 hours. 
  8. After 8 hours remove the ham bone from the slow cooker. 
  9. Serve and Enjoy!

NOTES:

* If you do not soak your beans overnight you cannot add the spiced until about 2 hours before you eat. It will affect the way the beans cook.

** You can use a ham bone, ham hock, fat back, bacon, diced ham, etc here.
