Poor Man's Philly Cheesesteak Sandwich

Now that spring is setting in, Studhub's allergies are starting to act up.  He has been dealing with some sinus issues so tonight, I wanted to make him something special.  If you learn nothing else about that man from me, learn this...HE IS A CARNIVORE!  Meat makes his heart happy, but let's face it, meat can be expensive.  It can really be expensive when you are getting into the trendier, more expensive cuts like the ones that are traditionally used in the classic Philly Cheesesteak Sandwich.  So that got me thinking, why not try a less expensive cut and see what happens.

Looking in my freezer, I decided to use cubed steak.  You most often hear about it being used as baked steak, or country fried steak, but never do you hear about it being used in sandwiches.  However, being the adventurous soul that I am, I thought I would give it a try.  The result was DELICIOUS and I can't wait to share it with you!

Poor Man's Philly Cheesesteak Sandwich:
*Prep Time:  10 minutes  *Cook Time:  20 minutes  *Difficulty:  Easy  *Servings:  4 sandwiches

Here is what you will need:

  • 2 cubed steaks
  • 4 sub buns
  • 1 onion, sliced
  • 1 green pepper, julienned
  • 1/4 c. Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tbsp. seasoning salt
  • Provolone or Monterey Jack cheese sauce (Recipe Here)

Tools you will need:
  • Chef's knife
  • Skillet
  • Measuring cup
  • Measuring spoon

As usual, you will want to get your skillet hot.  Once hot, you can add some butter or oil.

Now you will add your onions and cook them until soft.

Once soft, you will add the green peppers.
Let the peppers cook a couple minutes more to allow them to caramelize.

Remove the peppers and onions from the pan.

You will need to cut the cubed steak into strips.

Then cut the strips in half to make them easier to chew.
Cubed steak can have a bit of connective tissue in it that is not very palatable.
I simply removed all of that at this point.

Season your meat with seasoned salt and pepper.

Add to a how skillet and brown.

Once cooked through, return your peppers and onions to the pan and...

add a 1/4c. Worcestershire Sauce.
Let simmer until sauce thickens and reduces.
Stir occasionally.

Now you will need to slice your rolls in half and butter them.

Then place them facedown on a hot griddle or skillet.

Once toasted, add your meat mixture and drizzle with cheese sauce.  YUM!

I know any man will love this sandwich (and any woman for that matter) and they will never know that you used a less expensive cut of meat!  Let me know how this recipe works for you and feel free to post pictures on my FB page.  As always...
